Mark di Suvero, Eindhoven, Holland

Af en toe komt er weer informatie boven water. Van Hans van Eerd, beeldhouwer en collega docent van Jan Goossen, kreeg ik informatie over de periode dat Mark di Suvero in Eindhoven aan het werk was.

Mark di Suvero had in 1972 een solotentoonstelling in het Van Abbemuseum en plaatste een groot aantal beelden in de binnenstad van Eindhoven. Deze  beelden werden verspreid over de stad geplaatst. Omdat de kosten voor vervoer van een aantal grote beelden te hoog waren heeft Mark di Suvero 4 maanden in Eindhoven gewoond en bij de Vries Robbé een werkruimte gekregen. In deze werkruimte heeft hij met behulp van o.a. Jan Goossen, een 6-tal grote beelden vervaardigd (variërend van 7,5 tot 12 meter). Kan en Mark hadden elkaar in de V.S. al een paar keer ontmoet.

In 1972 I worked as draftsman at De Vries Robbe Steelstructures in Eindhoven-The Netherlands. At that time Mark di Suvero was offered a workshop for producing his steel structure art on the terrain of our company. I remember him on his white bisycle (provo issue in those days) at about 11 a.m. entering the gate of the firm. In his half open work shed he had a wooden bed tied up to a roof beam with four ropes. While rocking on that he gathered inspiration for his art. He was allowed by the company to use steelbeams from the stock of the firm. With the help of a small hand crane and a welding machine he created several artpieces of steelbeams which where shown in several parks of Eindhoven. Unfortunately children thought they were toys and started climbing on them. Of course this went wrong sometime and they fell off after which the local authorities put rubber tiles under the art structures. No signs of FORBIDDEN TO CLIMB of course. Later I discovered who he was (we had never heard of him) and that he also showed art in the Kroller Muller museum in Arnhem. I still have to go and see it. Those were the days.
